Common questions
How does SwapBox work?
List an item you no longer want by taking a photo. SwapBox's AI finds a match – someone who wants your item and has something you want. You drop your item at a smart locker in a shopping centre. When your match is ready, you scan, open the locker, and pick up your new item. You inspect it before accepting. No money changes hands.
What can I swap on SwapBox?
SwapBox currently supports women's fashion (activewear, tops, knitwear, outerwear, dresses), accessories (bags, scarves, jewellery under $50, sunglasses), kids' clothes (ages 0–12), and kids toys. More categories are added based on community demand.
Is SwapBox free?
Listing items is free. When you complete a swap, there is a small flat service fee ranging from $2 to $5.50 depending on the item's value. A refundable hold is placed on your card as security – it is released when you accept your item. Your first 3 swaps are completely free.
Where are SwapBox lockers located?
SwapBox smart lockers are located in shopping centres and high-traffic public areas across Brisbane, starting with Woolloongabba, Fortitude Valley, and Chermside. More locations are being added. You can see available lockers in the SwapBox app.
What if the item I receive isn't as described?
You inspect every item at the locker before accepting. If it's not as described, reject it. The other person's security deposit is given to you as compensation. SwapBox's escrow system means sending misrepresented items is financially penalised – protecting honest swappers.
Do I have to meet the other person?
No. You never meet the other swapper. You go to the locker when it's convenient for you, they go when it's convenient for them. The smart locker handles the handoff securely.
How is SwapBox different from selling on Facebook Marketplace?
SwapBox has no meetups with strangers at your home, no haggling over price, and no money changes hands. You swap what you have for what you want. The smart locker means secure, contactless exchange. And SwapBox's escrow system protects both parties – something Facebook Marketplace doesn't offer.
What is chain matching?
Chain matching is SwapBox's core technology, adapted from Nobel Prize-winning kidney exchange research. Instead of needing a direct swap partner, SwapBox finds chains. For example: Lauren lists an H&M dress, Sarah lists an outgrown size 2 kids bundle, Meg lists Lululemon leggings. Lauren gets the leggings, Sarah gets the dress, Meg gets the kids bundle — the kids clothes were the link that closed the chain.
